Israeli soldiers training in the field |
 |
According to studies conducted in the Israeli army the shortened 3 month program called "Shlav Bet" was not successful in making soldiers ready or useful. With recent failures such as those seen in the second Lebanon war, the army has decided to make service length decisions based on numerous dates, such as the date of Aliyah and the date of birth. They will also take into consideration family status. By increasing the length of service the Israeli Army hopes to train soldiers to be more capable of answering their growing needs.
The chart below details the new mandatory military service requirements that have gone into place since July 1st, 2006. If you are a doctor or dentist see the comments below regarding your army service.

Doctors - Until the age of 32 are required to serve 18 months in the Israeli Army with compensation.
Dentists - Until the age of 29 are required to serve 18 months in the Israeli Army with compensation.
